George Street Playhouse, a non-profit regional theatre company in New Brunswick, NJ, seeks New Jersey-based Spanish Bilingual Teaching Artists for virtual and in-person School Residency and GSP Academy Programs. GSP Teaching Artists take on a variety of roles including facilitator, actor, mentor, coach, and teacher. Typically, Teaching Artists are practicing professional artists who have dual careers as educators and possess equal commitment to the arts and education. They have backgrounds in a wide range of theatre arts practices and work in a variety of settings including Theatre Academy classes, residency partnerships with schools, and community programs with diverse populations.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Create developmentally-appropriate and culturally relevant, transdisciplinary-focused curriculum, units, and lessons aligned with NJ Student Learning Standards.

2. Implement arts integrated curriculum to support academic learning and/or social and emotional development through culturally responsive theatre arts instruction.

3. Plan and establish a safe learning environment for all participants and artists to foster inclusion, pro-social development, modeling positive behavior, and supporting participant accomplishments.

4. Participate in pre-plan and post-planning meetings with co-teaching artists, staff, and or collaborators.

5. Encourage all students to “share out” what they have learned and reflect on their learning at each session.

6. Experience in guiding students to full-scale culminating presentations.

7. Document work-related successes and challenges and share with administrative staff.

8. Adhere to policies of the organization and contracted sites (school districts, community. organizations), reporting any incidents or problems to leadership and school administrators and GSP Administrative staff.

9. Be a positive role model to students, school staff and fellow Teaching Artists.

10. Performs such other job related tasks as assigned.


1. At least 3 years of working experience in a similar role, preferably in diverse settings with culturally, racially and linguistically diverse students.

2. English/Spanish bilingual with high fluency in both languages.

3. New Jersey-based teaching artist, Central New Jersey preferred.

4. Degree (MFA, BFA, BA, BS, etc.) in related fields required.

5. Demonstrated commitment to diversity and to engaging in culturally responsive teaching practices.

6. Successful record of working with diverse students, residents, and community-based organizations.

7. Highly skilled in and with practical knowledge of one or all of the following theatre arts disciplines; acting, improvisation, playwriting, movement, vocal production, devised theatre, theatre design or technical theatre production.

8. Experience utilizing arts education programming as a tool for healthy social-emotional development, leadership development, and community building.

9. Experience working in K-12 schools.

10. Ability to work independently, be flexible, and manage multiple priorities.

11. Work well in a team-oriented environment and maintain harmonious relationships.

12. Effective and engaging public speaking skills; experience in preparing presentations.

13. Time and classroom management.

14. Proficient computer skills, especially using Microsoft Suite and Google Suite of applications.

15. Detail-oriented with excellent communication, organizational, interpersonal, and writing skills.

16. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the GSP Managing Director may find appropriate and acceptable.
