Writers House at Rutgers-Camden

The Writers House at Rutgers University-Camden is hiring teaching artists for Growing Great Writers, an after-school creative writing program for students in grades 4-8. Six positions will be available. Teaching artists team-teach creative writing "club" sessions, focused on fun, creative encounters with new language, forms, and genres, at one of three after-school sites in Camden. Teaching artists lead sessions once per week from October through April (a total of 24 sessions). A training session in August 2021 will bring teaching artists together and introduce them to the program and to our partners.
Duties and ResponsibilitiesTAs will co-lead 24 sessions of a creative writing club at one of three Camden after-school sites; plan a progressive curriculum that takes into account varying attendance; plan a celebratory end-of-year publication and/or reading for students; and participate in an August training session and periodic check-ins with the program director and other teaching artists.
Compensation: $1200 stipend.
RequirementsSuccessful candidates will have a strong track record of curriculum and lesson planning, especially in creative writing; experience teaching in out-of-school time environments such as summer programs, after-school programs, or weekend programs; and experience with trauma-informed teaching. 1-3 years of experience working with elementary and/or middle school students. Bilingual in English/Spanish, with the ability to teach and prepare curriculum materials in Spanish if necessary, a plus. Candidates with a connection to Camden, NJ are strongly encouraged to apply.
