Overview: The Greater Princeton Youth Orchestra (GPYO) seeks a seasoned, creative, and energetic nonprofit manager to lead us through our next phase of growth. The ideal candidate must have a passion for music education and will have a strong track record in fundraising and organizational development. This is a wonderful opportunity for a strategic, flexible, and collaborative leader gifted at building relationships with a range of stakeholders.

Starting Date: April 2022
Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. Full-time position, including Monday evening rehearsals (September through early June), and occasional weekend events. Reports to: GPYO Board of Directors

Duties and Responsibilities

The Executive Director is responsible for the day-to-day operation of GPYO and its overall strategic direction, administration, and fundraising consistent with the policies and directives established by the Board. The Executive Director has broad authority to guide the operations of the GPYO in collaboration with the Music Director and the GPYO Board to achieve the organization's mission and strategic goals. The Executive Director is responsible for the planning, coordination, supervision, and execution of all GPYO activities.

Priorities:
• Provide executive administration, operational structure, promotional support and financial management for our annual programs and new member recruitment.
• Lead strategic planning and organizational development efforts by working with the Board and other constituents to establish short- and long-range goals and define policies and procedures.
• Cultivate relationships with current and past members, leaders of regional arts organizations, and civic leaders.
• Facilitate governance and Board development.
• Collaborate productively with partner institutions including Westminster Conservatory of Music.
• Enhance the organization’s profile and visibility throughout the community.

Executive Administration and Management – Finance, Operations, and Staffing
• Works closely with Operations Manager to ensure the smooth delivery of programs, concerts, and tours.
• Ensures appropriate resourcing for Music Director and artistic staff.
• Manages GPYO’s finances in collaboration with the treasurer, bookkeeper, and Board of Directors to ensure responsible stewardship of resources.
• Recruits, hires, trains, supervises staff members in accordance with GPYO policies and all applicable laws.
• Oversees administrative elements of student recruitment efforts.
• With the Music Director, maintains and cultivates relationships with educators and guest artists.
• Ensures GPYO’s compliance with applicable state/federal regulations and develops internal policies and procedures with the Board.

Fundraising, Marketing, and Public Relations
• Cultivates and strengthens relationships with existing and new donors.
• Maintains a comprehensive database of constituents, collaborators, and stakeholders.
• Enhances the organization’s image and visibility, with the Music Director and the Board of Directors.
• Deploys communications strategy and cultivates key media relationships to maximize visibility and exposure.
• Develops, maintains, and manages positive, effective interactions with current and prospective stakeholders.


Strategic Planning and Organizational Development
• Collaborates with Board of Directors, staff, and community stakeholders to develop a strategic framework and operational plan to guide the organization.
• Nurtures relationships with current and prospective GPYO community partners including Westminster Conservatory of Music, artistic organizations, local educational institutions, and service organizations.
• Supports the Board of Directors by ensuring that the strategic vision, mission, and organizational priorities of the GPYO are in alignment.
• Coordinates Board participation in fundraising.
• Acts as the communication conduit between the Board and staff.
• Partners with the Board Chair to maximize board engagement; plays an active role in identifying, cultivating, recruiting, and orienting new Board members.
• Provides leadership to Board committees, preparing written and oral reports for presentation and attends all meetings of the Board, Executive Committee, and other Board committees.
• Reports to the Board on initiatives to promote efficient operation and delivery of programs.
• Advises the Board in development and regular review of policies and procedures.
• Promotes a positive work environment by building rapport with the staff, students, parents, and alumni.
• Develops an environment of goodwill, inclusion, and empowerment through consistent displays of professionalism, courtesy, integrity, respect, and proactive listening.
• Encourages achievement and professional development of GPYO staff. Works with staff and Board to energize and engage parents in ongoing organizational support.
• Maintains an active, positive presence for the organization in local, regional, and national musical and nonprofit organizations as appropriate.
• Seeks ongoing professional development to keep current with best practices among orchestras, the arts, and nonprofits.

Other
Performs other activities as requested by the Board of Directors to ensure that the mission and objectives of the GPYO are effectively and ethically performed.

Requirements

• Master’s degree or BA with extensive experience in business administration or public administration
• Prior experience in music and/or arts production and education
• Participation in a non-profit environment for at least two years or similar experience in fundraising and/or organizational management
• Effective oral and written communication skills
• Ability to manage a wide variety of activities and multi-task, plus ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends
• Experience working with a board of directors, or service on a non-profit board
• Strong people skills and ability to work with all ages
• Public speaking ability and ability to interact with potential funders
• Ability to work independently to achieve goals
• Technical proficiency with Google Workspace, accounting and database software, and social media sources
