On November 21, 2024, by a vote of 219-184, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 9495, harmful legislation that would empower the U.S. Treasury Secretary to unilaterally deem nonprofits as terrorist-supporting organizations and revoke their tax exemptions with little due process. The bill now moves to the U.S. Senate.
It is crucial to stay alert and urge our elected officials to stand against this bill.
S. 4136, is a proposed bill to amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to terminate the tax-exempt status of terrorist supporting organizations. According to the American Civil Liberties Union, there are “deep concerns about the bill’s potential to grant the executive branch extraordinary power to investigate, harass, and effectively dismantle any nonprofit organization.” This bill gives the executive branch the authority to effectively dismantle any nonprofit organization it deems to have provided "material support" to terrorist groups and the potential for abuse under this law is staggering.
Please join us in asking New Jersey’s Senators to vote NO on S. 4136 if it comes up in the Senate. This legislation inappropriately combines well-intentioned tax relief for Americans held hostage abroad with deeply destructive provisions that would allow the Treasury Secretary to designate nonprofits as ‘terrorist-supporting organizations’ and strip their tax exemptions with little justification or due process. This bill in its current form is extremely harmful to nonprofits and the people and communities we serve.
