The Director of Marketing and PR shapes institutional branding, marketing, public relations, and video content to amplify YA’s ability to meet schools’ needs. YA’s customer base includes PreK-8 PTA/PTO representatives, arts educators, classroom teachers, and school or district level educational leaders. The Director will tailor strategies accordingly, with creatively engaging design sensibilities. The Director will synthesize sales results and analytics to determine the most engaging methods to amplify YA’s message and brand. An increase in school contracts over time will be a key indicator of success in this role.

Duties and Responsibilities

Young Audiences Arts for Learning New Jersey & Eastern Pennsylvania’s (YA) mission is to inspire young people and expand their learning through the arts.

Since its founding in 1973, YA has grown into the region’s most comprehensive arts education organization. Our venue is the school. YA delivers teaching artist-led arts programming directly in PK-12th grade schools through residencies, workshops, performances, and teacher professional learning. In a typical year, YA reaches approximately 400,000 students in our region, and has a $3M operating budget. Position Summary—Director of Marketing and PR

The Director of Marketing and PR shapes institutional branding, marketing, public relations, and video content to amplify YA’s ability to meet schools’ needs. YA’s customer base includes PreK-8 PTA/PTO representatives, arts educators, classroom teachers, and school or district level educational leaders. The Director will tailor strategies accordingly, with creatively engaging design sensibilities. The Director will synthesize sales results and analytics to determine the most engaging methods to amplify YA’s message and brand. An increase in school contracts over time will be a key indicator of success in this role.

The Director is a key role in a small team that keeps the mission at the forefront of all efforts. The Director works cross-departmentally, requiring proactive communication, active listening, creative thinking, advance planning, and team coordination. This role toggles between big picture thinking, visioning and strategy (10-20% of the time), and the execution of strategy (80-90% of the time). Strong technical skills are needed, along with a responsiveness to market needs and the ability to ideate, conceptualize strategy and voice, and lead team efforts.

The Director supervises the P/T Marketing Associate, who implements social media and email marketing campaigns. The Director oversees the work of design, print, digital media and video production consultants as needed. The Director reports to the President & CEO.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Marketing and Business Development (60%)

• Develop and implement a strong marketing and messaging strategy, informed by data
• Strategically and creatively manage $100K marketing/PR budget to meet organizational goals
• Create or collaborate with contractors to create vibrant, high-quality materials
• Lead creation and mailing of comprehensive 64-page print resource guide, annually
• Manage website, including content, design, functionality, and SEO
• Lead social media and email marketing strategy, supervise implementation
• Oversee vendors, including photographer, videographer, designer, printer as needed.
• Ensure marketing is inclusive, and accessible in line with YA Arts United goals and values.

Supervise Marketing Associate who will:
• Create posts and manage social media engagement (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn)
• Create mail marketing campaigns
• Manage Google Adwords campaign with outside consultant
• Updates website content.

Video/Digital Content Development (20%)
• Lead strategy and development of video content, including creative use of current assets and development of new assets.
• Complete small video editing and production projects in house

Public Relations and Advocacy: (10%)
• Showcase highlights year-round, using “News and Events” webpage, social media and other means
• Pursue outlets for media placements and coverage
• Prepare and disseminate press releases; monitor and archive press hits
• Spearhead special efforts related to advocacy for arts funding and legislation
• Manage annual awards (NJ Governor’s Awards in Arts Education, YA Arts Champion Awards)

YA Organization-Wide Initiatives (10%)
• Create materials as needed, for presentations, conferences and fundraising events
• Represent YA in regional partnerships to advance the mission.
• Participate in Young Audiences’ organization-wide efforts to improve in relation to diversity, equity, inclusion, and access, according to YA’s Arts United Plan
• Play a role at Young Audiences’ fundraising, events, and other initiatives, in flexible capacities depending on the need.

Requirements

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

• Candidates must have an abiding belief in arts education and understand the critical role that artists have in education
• 5+ years experience in marketing in the arts, education, arts education, or related field
• Enthusiasm, creative thinking, and vision for amplifying organizational positioning and messaging
• Understanding of schools in our region, or a demonstrated appetite to develop in this area
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively through all mediums, including writing marketing copy, press releases, and social media content
• Proficiency: Adobe, Canva, Formstack, Constant Contact, WordPress, InDesign, and video editing software
• Experience integrating anti-bias, anti-oppression, anti-racist practices into marketing
• Skill with synthesizing data (Google and Facebook Analytics, sales results, email campaign stats, etc.) to drive decisions and strategy
• Fiscal discipline and strong organizational and planning skills

How To Apply

Additional Information • YA is a hybrid work environment. During initial 3-month provisional employment period, in-office (Princeton) work is required several times a week. • After provisional period, in-office presence required approximately 4 times/month. • Visits to our in-school programs are essential in the provisional employment period, and necessary for this role on an ongoing basis, 3-5 times/month. • Travel within our service region of New Jersey and Eastern PA required. Mileage is reimbursed. • YA Office hours are 8:30-4:30, M-F. This position requires significant computer usage.
