Core responsibility: Create overall strategy for advertising, direct mail, website, email and marketing automation campaigns. Manage marketing department operations and team in the development and implementation of audience development initiatives and subscription and single-ticket campaigns in alignment with the organization’s strategic goals. Grow and maximize press relationships and awareness of New Jersey Symphony as an institution, with heavy focus on New Jersey and New York media.

Salary: $60,000 to $70,000 annually

Duties and Responsibilities

Subscription and Single-Ticket Campaign Strategy and Production

• Develop and oversee implementation of all marketing campaign plans and segmentation strategy in collaboration with external vendors and internal team. Track effectiveness of campaigns and adjust future plans to achieve revenue targets.
• Oversee the subscription renewal, acquisition and single ticket direct mail campaigns, including strategy, segmentation, mail-house fulfillment, post office coordination and analysis of campaigns.
• Work with the Patron Services team on subscription renewal and acquisition campaigns, including assisting with fulfillment of patron notifications and subscription tickets.
• Manage the telemarketing campaign by attending weekly meetings, reviewing campaign reporting and coordinate telemarketing offers with direct mail and social promotion initiatives to leverage results. Work with the Tessitura Database Manager to send data in support of the campaign, and with Patron Services to support patron-related inquiries and transactions.
• Oversee New Jersey Symphony’s digital agencies on programmatic display ads and direct placement ads, with assistance from the Marketing Manager.
• Collaborate with all venue partners to ensure strong revenue results for co-presentations and special concerts.
• Create and embrace a culture of ongoing analysis, evaluate campaign results and recommend changes to strategy based on findings.
• Assist in the creation of marketing expense budget and manage reconciliation of invoices. Seek opportunities to control costs and maximize conversions and ROI.

Marketing Strategy & Audience Development

• In collaboration with the Vice President of Marketing & External Affairs, develop strategies for subscriber acquisition and retention and repeat single-ticket purchases.
• Working with the Marketing Manager, develop and grow existing and new audience development programs, including Young Friends, University Class Pass and other constituency-focused programs.
• Spearhead initiatives to develop creative partnerships with venues that result in increased sales.
• In collaboration with the Vice President, integrate key initiatives of the Strategic Plan into the day-to-day operations of the department work plans and identify deliverables on an annual basis.

Creative Services & Copywriting

• Serve as the Creative Services & Copywriting lead for the organization, overseeing delivery of content, authoring content, tracking proofing and revisions, and ensuring on-time, error-free delivery of the final products.
• Working with the Marketing Production Coordinator and the Art Director, lead the overall project management of all graphic project and digital production requests.
• Meet with other departments on their graphic and digital project requests and serve as a liaison between departments, ensuring projects remain on track and are completed on time.
• Oversee program book management, contracting and working with program-notes writer; gathering, formatting and proofing content from all departments; working with Art Director on layouts and managing proofing process. Contract and manage relationships with freelance designers and consultants as necessary.

Public Relations & Communications

• Proactively identify story opportunities to pitch strategically to media outlets to amplify the New Jersey Symphony’s story and reputation as a world-class orchestra in the local, national and international markets.
• Develop plan, strategy and schedule for press communications. Write, proof and send press releases that elevate the New Jersey Symphony brand in areas of artistic, education and community events; institution-wide and development news; and key leadership. Craft press pitches; facilitate press tickets, event photography and video requests.
• Identify, forge and develop 1-1 relationships with media of key strategic importance, creating two-way dialogue to facilitate outbound and inbound earned media opportunities.
• Create and implement press strategy for major announcements. Coordinate press events, arrange media availability for New Jersey Symphony personnel and work with colleagues on the content team for coordinated announcement rollouts across Symphony channels.
• Strategize with Vice President of Marketing & External Affairs and others on the senior leadership team for institutional responses to breaking news. Prepare New Jersey Symphony representatives for interviews. Draft quotes and talking points to reinforce brand messages and/or serve as part of any crisis public relations management.
• Implement a vigorous media strategy that supports and drives ticket sales through positive stories profiling upcoming New Jersey Symphony events and featured artists.
• Work with artist and venue PR representatives to amplify media awareness of co-presentations.

Requirements

Support Organization’s Communication Needs

• In conjunction with Vice President of Marketing & External Affairs, create and implement a strategy around internal communications to staff, board, musicians and key stakeholders.
• Proofread all produced materials to ensure adherence to New Jersey Symphony style guide, standards and brand messaging. Maintain organizational style guide.
• Maintain positive relationships with internal and external constituents.
• Attend concerts and represent the New Jersey Symphony to concertgoers throughout the state.
• Provide support to marketing and other departments as needed.

Staff Management & Coordination

• Lead and develop team of two, who have primary responsibility for advertising and media placement, audience development, broadcast email and website production, and other department coordination.
• Work with the content team to set goals for website and email engagement. Support overall strategy to engage trustees, musicians and staff, as well as our patrons, through social media outlets.
• Hire, train, mentor and conduct performance reviews for direct reports.
• Identify and create opportunities for professional development for direct reports.

Department Operations

• Under the direction of Vice President, assist with the creation of the department expense budget and actively participate in reconciliation efforts.
• Maintain positive relationships with internal and external constituents, including key community members, patrons, vendors, consultants, volunteers, trustees, musicians and staff.
• Attend concerts and represent the New Jersey Symphony to concertgoers throughout the state.
• Provide support for the Vice President of Marketing & External Affairs as needed and represent the New Jersey Symphony and/or the Vice President at meetings as necessary.
• Serve as department point-person for cross-department institutional initiatives.

Skills, Experience and Qualifications

• A passion for working in the non-profit arts community.
• Desire to embrace organization’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives and support and an inclusive and respectful organizational culture.
• Excellent proofreading skills, both in editorial capacity and institutional messaging alignment. Knowledge of AP Style a plus.
• Demonstrated experience in managing relationships externally and internally to support advertising, telemarketing and digital agency campaigns.
• Bachelor’s degree required; 10 to 15 years of total professional experience required, preferably in a capacity directly related to marketing, advertising or communications.
• Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom, Basecamp project management software, Tessitura patron database software and ActiveCampaign marketing automation software.
• Project management skills, especially in relation to content production.
