The House Manager and Asst. House Managers at McCarter Theatre Center join the Patron Experience Department as members of the Front of House team and will carry out the theater’s mission by supporting the Front of House Supervisor. House Managers (HM) and Asst. House Manager (AHM) are outgoing, motivated individuals who possess excellent leadership and customer service skills and must be able to multitask in a high-pressure environment while managing Front of House team members ranging from 15 – 20 individuals depending on the performance. These individuals must have reliable modes of transportation and will be required to work matinee, weeknight and weekend performances.

Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities - HM
• Effectively manage and run all Front of House operations for each performance with regards to patrons, artists, guests, and staff.
• Understand, respectfully communicate, and facilitate alignment with all performance guidelines and policies as set forth by McCarter.
• Facilitate performance reports and employee records for each event.
• Maintain electronic devices: scanners, hearing devices and radios for the theatres and report to IT when issues arise.
• Check venue facilities before and after the performance to ensure that the space may be used to its potential. Report repair and maintenance needs to the Director of Operations.
• Know and understand McCarter's emergency procedures and be able to appropriately execute them with calm and precision in the event of an emergency.
• Train other Front of House staff members under the direction of the Front of House Supervisor.

Responsibilities - AHM
• Support the Front of House Supervisor and House Manager (HM) to ensure the successful run of a show.
• Train and motivate a corps of ushers, as well as, leading and assisting ushers with all performance related tasks.
• Under the direction of the HM, understand, respectfully communicate, and facilitate alignment with performance guidelines and policies as set forth by McCarter.
• Assist in the maintenance of electronic devices: scanners, hearing devices and radios and report to HM when issues arise.
• Check venue facilities before and after the performance to ensure that the space may be used to its potential. Report all repair and maintenance needs to the HM.
• With calm and precision, execute appropriate emergency procedures in the event of an emergency.
• Assist with the training of other Front of House staff members at the request or direction of the Front of House Supervisor.


Responsibilities - Both Positions
• Attend all Patron Experience training sessions required by the Director of Patron Experience.
• Maintain consistent awareness of institutional events, meetings, and other information via company email.
• Initiate a positive experience while communicating with a diverse patron base, including the adherence of McCarter’s Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Accessibility (EDIA), and Antiracism expectations for both staff and audience members.
• Build and strengthen relationships between patrons and McCarter Theatre Center while representing the organization to our audiences according to our values
• Adhere to safe working practices and follow all McCarter safety and code of conduct policies
• Participate in the work to make McCarter an anti-racist theater. Actively seek ways to improve our work practices to make McCarter more Equitable and Inclusive.

Requirements

Qualifications – Both Positions
• Availability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays during the performance season, as scheduled in advance
• Standing for long periods of time e.g. 4 – 5-hour intervals
• Potential for moderate to high noise environments depending on production and performance elements
• Leadership and management experience working with large groups of people
• Ability to take charge of a situation, delegate, and multi-task as necessary
• Possesses a confident and approachable personality with excellent customer service skills
• Superb attention to detail and proactive nature
• Ability to problem solve creatively, in a time-sensitive environment
• Computer knowledge (Microsoft Word, Excel, Microsoft Outlook)
• Must be a team player and thrive in a collaborative environment with a good sense of humor
• Strong EDIA and antiracism critical consciousness
• Ability to collaborate with diverse needs, personalities, and work styles with optimism and a solution discovery mindset
• Final candidates must successfully complete a background check
• Start date is contingent upon providing proof of having received a primary series vaccination against COVID-19; subsequent boosters are strongly encouraged, though not required.

Preferred Qualifications – Both Positions
• CPR/AED/First-Aid Certification
