The Manager of Ceramics Studio is a part-time (25 hours per week) position that oversees the technical and operational aspects of the museum’s ceramics studios. Working with the Manager of Public Programs and teaching artists to coordinate public workshops for adults and families, making sure all materials, working spaces and systems are updated with current schedules. This position reports to GFS’ Director of Education and Engagement and works collaboratively across the Education Department, and other departments throughout the museum, on planning, execution and, evaluation of the GFS ceramics program. Education Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) practice, strong written and communication skills, collaborative working style and a self-starter are needed.

Duties and Responsibilities

Grounds For Sculpture (GFS) is at the beginning of a long path toward building a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive (EDI) institution. We are looking for individuals, at all levels of the institution, who are interested in joining us on this journey of intentionality and public accountability. This path broadens our workforce (board, staff, volunteers), expands our artist selection and acquisition practice as well as strengthens our internal and external communication systems, networks and norms.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Oversees the operation and maintenance of two ceramics studios and two kilns implementing best practices for safety and efficiency.
• Serve as an ambassador for Grounds For Sculpture to help foster a culture of inclusion for all members, donors, volunteers, and guests.
• Handles all materials orders, ensuring supplies for programs are always on hand.
• Maintains kiln firing schedule in coordination with teaching artists and GFS staff.
• Articulates and conveys the museum’s mission and programming to diverse audiences and community stakeholders and establishes and maintains effective working relationships with colleagues, GFS supporters, and the public at large.
• Strategically expands opportunities, in all program areas, to increase and generate new contributed and earned revenue--thoughtfully budgeting, forecasting, and managing this growth with sustainability squarely in mind.
• Assists in creating network of ceramics artists to teach and collaborate with GFS
• Works collaboratively with colleagues across GFS to develop, coordinate, and promote ceramics programs tied to temporary exhibitions, new institutional initiatives, and/or strategic goals.
• Maintains a safe work environment, using the proper health standards for clay dust and any particulates that may be hazardous.
• Assists in administrative needs as needed
• All other duties as assigned

Requirements

• 3 or more years of relevant work experience
• Experience managing a ceramics studio a plus
• Demonstrate respect and inclusiveness to all employees, embracing differences
• Demonstrated ability teaching ceramics and sculptural techniques. Strong knowledge of tools and materials.
• Excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication and writing skills
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively.
• Understanding of best practices in the field of Museum Education
• Experience working with professional artists and learners of all ages
