Summary: The Director of Education and Community Engagement is responsible for the overall leadership, management and integration of the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey’s public programming and community engagement programs. These programs cover three areas: Museum programs, K-12 Education programs, and Art & Healing programs.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions

Program Planning and Development
• Provide leadership for all aspects of program development, planning, scheduling and implementation encompassing the Art Center’s community engagement and education partnerships and public programs.
• Conduct an ongoing evaluation of all department programs and activities with long-range goals in mind toward continuing growth of each program area.
• Report to the chair of the Strategic Oversight Committee to develop proper appraisals to ensure department is meeting the goals outlined in the strategic plan and mission.
• Collaborate with Development to identify & apply for appropriate state, corporate and private funding for programs.

Museum Programs
• Oversee Docent Program including recruiting, training, and scheduling docents.
• Oversee Gallery Education Programs including booking all school tours, scheduling docents and instructors, ordering supplies, and conceptualizing art projects.
• Collaborate with the Art Center’s Curator to develop exhibition-related programs such as artist talks, lectures, artmaking workshops, panel discussions, and film screenings.
• Coordinate all planning and logistics for public programs including payment to vendors, presenters, and artists, ordering of supplies and refreshments, communicating setup needs to various internal departments, and greeting guests.

K-12 Education Programs
• Oversee the development and execution of the Art Center’s professional development programs for art educators including the annual Teachers’ Symposium and custom professional development workshops.
• Oversee the Art Center’s partnership with Elizabeth Public Schools which includes a sequential museum learning program with 300 high school students, gallery education tour program with 400 middle school students, a professional development program for 65 art teachers from the district, and a visual learning program with the district’s bilingual program.

Marketing and Promotion
• Collaborate with the Development & Communications Department to determine a public relations/marketing plan for all department offerings..
• Represent the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey to the highest professional standards and works with its various public groups (volunteers, artists, students, members, business and government agencies, and arts organizations).
• Maintain a statewide presence for Visual Arts Center of New Jersey programs by participation in other arts affiliated organizations.

Fiscal
• Develop and manage department budgets and provide all budget information necessary for grant reporting and submission.
• Review, approve, and track all department expenses. Manage all department expenses within the budget.
• Prepare fiscal reports on department activities.

Personnel
• Interview, hire, supervise, and evaluate all department staff and volunteers, including the Art & Healing Program Assistant and teaching artists.
• Manage the contract creation and terms and agreements for contracted workers in the department.
• Create and supervise all department employee schedules and timesheet submissions for payroll.

Requirements

Qualifications
This position requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree and knowledge of contemporary art history. The position requires excellent management, organization, and people skills. At least 5 years related professional experience is desired. Experience with creating program for school-age students, experience creating professional development programs for school teachers is desired, an interest in social justice issues and experience in community-driven practice is desired.

Physical and Mental Demands
The position frequently requires mental demands of reading/writing, planning, making decisions, and problem solving. This position requires frequent use of computer and telephone. This position requires occasional lifting and carrying of up to 20 lbs.

Work Environment
The position is frequently indoors in an office environment. This position allows flexibility for 10% of time working from home.
