Founded in 1992, the New Jersey Youth Chorus, a program of Wharton Arts, is a choral program for singers in grades K-12. We are excited to expand our offerings with the Primi Passi (First Steps) class. Our mission is to deliver exceptional choral music education and performance opportunities, fostering expression, artistry and growth.

Primi Passi is a non-auditioned music exploration class for students in grades K-2. The singing-based curriculum is focused on developing basic music literacy and vocal skills through engaging musical games, rhythmic activities, folk dancing/movement, visual learning, and simple percussion instruments. Duties and Responsibilities

● In collaboration with NJYC’s Director, develop a curriculum aligned with the organization’s mission, vision, and budget.
● Set curriculum goals
● Select appropriate and quality repertoire, games, and activities
● Prepare weekly lesson plans
● Lead all Primi Passi classes, and events/performances as required (2-4 annually).
● Prepare memos for families and choristers with updates and practice-at-home materials as needed.
● Contribute to marketing materials and press releases as needed.
● Communicate promptly with the Director and administration regarding choir needs.
● Exhibits role model behavior aligned with NJYC’s mission to inspire its members to achieve artistic excellence and develop their potential.

Rehearsal Schedule:
● Location: 570 Central Avenue, New Providence, NJ
● Time: Saturday mornings, 9:30 – 10:45 AM, September — May

Requirements

● Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education (minimum requirement)
● Teaching experience preferred
● Knowledge of vocal techniques and literature suitable for young singers
● Familiarity with Kodaly methodology/Takadimi rhythm syllables and/or John Feierabend approach is a plus
● Excellent classroom management skills
● Effective communication with artistic staff, office staff, and parents
