We use jazz programming and the joy of playing creative music, advanced by master practitioners of the art form, as a gateway to student achievement on and off the bandstand, boosting students' social and emotional learning, academic outcomes, improving life skills, and increasing civic engagement.

Duties and Responsibilities

As we expand our educational footprint of programming and performance, our department leadership is being restructured into two specific areas of focus. This co-directorship consists of a Director of Jazz Education + Performance to oversee jazz educational activities at the JAZZ HOUSE in Montclair, NJ and a Director of In-School Music Education + Programming to oversee access to high quality music education with an emphasis of jazz in largely under-resourced schools.

JAZZ HOUSE KiDS welcomes the Director of In-School Music Education + Programming as a key leadership position that furthers our mission to provide the highest quality music education and authentic jazz learning in underserved classrooms and special programs that bridge the gaps in arts.
The Director of In-School Programs will be an experienced jazz educator and arts administrator with significant relationship-building experience and a proven ability to lead the strategic and day-to-day management of all in-school programming in largely underserved public schools, oversees curriculum development, and manages partnerships and recruitment efforts in key schools and performance and community engagement initiatives. Chief in-school programs include: the JAZZ HOUSE Music Club residency program, the Give an Instrument Build a Musician Program, the JAZZ HOUSE Vocal Summit and Assembly Programs and Visiting Masterclass Series and special programs at the JAZZ HOUSE including CHiCA Power

Key areas of oversight require:
A proven arts administrator with significant relationship building experience and a proven ability to maintain and develop high quality programs within budget and within curriculum alignment to meet goals and provide best-in-class impact.
Oversee Jazz-in-Schools programming to provide evaluation and curriculum oversight and maintain student enrollment goals to develop and maintain a healthy program pipeline
Program oversight and evaluation, meeting recruitment and enrollment goals, goal-oriented and data analysis driven, strong budgeting and management skills, commitment to fostering local, regional, national and global partnerships in a professional manner.
An experienced jazz educator with a commitment to enriching communities through the arts with significant experience in managing professional faculty and evaluation, and performance development
A dedicated practitioner of the art form of jazz with a passion and knowledge of jazz and its history, legacy and culture.
Ability to facilitate access to the arts for all and to engage young people and adult learners.
Ability to provide leadership in a fast-paced environment, juggle multiple priorities and lead a committed jazz faculty.
Desire to use technology and online learning as a positive tool to broaden reach and create new programming opportunities beyond the pandemic.


Programming Oversight in the Schools:
Pre-k through 12 Arts Education Standards: Oversee our in-school programming in underserved school districts to provide sequential learning and curriculum oversight and evaluation, and ensure programming meets core curriculum standards
Partnerships: Responsible for maintaining partnerships with school leadership and developing
new partnership for program offerings
Faculty Supervision: Hire and manage all faculty staff from recruitment and orientation, to curriculum oversight and evaluation.
Manage the Team: Interview, supervise, and evaluate reporting staff, teaching artists, teaching assistants and interns. Work in tandem with other departments including operations, marketing and development. ​​
Curriculum and Program Development: Create and develop high-quality, scalable music education and enrichment programs with clear objectives and anticipated outcomes in accordance with national standards and best practices.
Concerts and Musical Enrichment: Oversee and plan all concerts, special trips, community concerts. Produce and oversee all musical enrichment programming.
Evaluation: Lead robust evaluation initiative to monitor and evaluate all JAZZ HOUSE KiDS in-school education programs. Prepare final reports, statistics, and analyses for funders and school partners.
Furthering the Organizational Brand: Carry out the overarching educational goals and artistic vision of Founder & President Melissa Walker and Artistic Director Christian McBride.
Recruitment: Maintain student enrollment goals for existing and new programs. Establish relationships with music educators, school administrators, national partners, and professional organizations, and maintain a schedule of visiting school programs to recruit students and adult learners for our programs.
Special Programs: CHiCA Power
Evaluation: Determine program objectives and impact goals for all activities. Lead a robust observation and evaluation process to monitor and garner feedback and analyze data that informs us of the strength of our programs and meets funding reporting requirements.

Qualifications: Skills, Knowledge & Expertise:
Demonstrated ability to develop sequential music learning programs with corresponding curriculum for both beginner and advanced students, including facilitate online learning and use new technologies to achieve educational goals in a virtual environment
Proven record of fostering an engaged and excited jazz community of students, faculty, celebrated artists, alumni, donors and fans
Pre-K-12 arts training, curriculum development and knowledge of state standards is required
Demonstrated ability to develop sequential music learning programs with corresponding curriculum
Strong musicianship and professional performance experience a plus
Self-motivated, high energy, and team-oriented with a can-do attitude
Ability to anticipate programmatic needs, plan, organize, implement and direct programs while balancing multiple priorities effectively in a fast-paced, constantly evolving environment
Demonstrated ability to manage and oversee staff, Strong relationship management skills and ability to handle difficult and/or sensitive situations
Interest in use of technology and digital learning as a positive tool to broaden reach and create new programming opportunities beyond the pandemic
Able to effectively engage in student outreach and recruitment
Impeccable organizational skills and attention to detail
Exceptional oral and written communication skills
Professional, nonjudgmental, compassionate demeanor with good listening skills
Bachelor’s degree required in music (music performance, jazz performance, music education), education, or another related field; Master’s degree preferred and a minimum of four years of arts administrative experience
Ability to play multiple instruments a plus and proficient to play jazz is required
At least three years working in youth education, youth development, program management or other relevant fields
Advanced knowledge of Mac OS, Microsoft Word and Excel, Google Suite, and Zoom
Familiarity with DAW software, Finale/Sibelius or other music notation software a plus
Proficiency in Spanish would be a big plus
