The Registrar will report to the Director of Collections and Exhibitions and will be responsible for managing a wide variety of activities related to the care and documentation of the collection and activities related to the changing exhibition program.

Duties and Responsibilities

Grounds For Sculpture (GFS) is at the beginning of a long path toward building a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive (EDI) institution. We are looking for individuals, at all levels of the institution, who are interested in joining us on this journey of intentionality and public accountability. This path broadens our workforce (board, staff, volunteers), expands our artist selection and acquisition practice as well as strengthens our internal and external communication systems, networks and norms.

The Registrar will report to the Director of Collections and Exhibitions and will be responsible for managing a wide variety of activities related to the care and documentation of the collection and activities related to the changing exhibition program.

Duties and Responsibilities
• Schedule and manage conservation activities as outlined in the long-range Conservation Plan and as directed by supervisor.
• Prepare documentation of conservation activities, licensing agreements, acquisitions, and track movement of works in the collection, maintaining appropriate records in accession files and collections database.
• Manage the annual renewable loan program for incoming loans to the collection, including correspondence with lenders and artists, as well as outgoing loans from the collection. Schedule regular inspections of sculptures located off-site.
• Maintain the MIMSY database, including creation and modification of catalog records.
• Direct seasonal cleaning of the collection includes creating schedules and work lists for Preparator and Coordinator, and monitoring progress.
• Catalog and accession new acquisitions to the collection. Document and execute deaccessions when directed.
• Be a key part of the successful implementation of the indoor changing exhibitions and new installations outdoors by securing estimates for shipping, fabrication, contracted labor, equipment rental, engineering, and supplies; scheduling contractors; monitoring installation/deinstallation process; condition reporting; physically assisting in the installations/deinstallation as needed.
• Act as department point person for internal and external rights & reproduction questions/requests; Provide credit lines for published images online or in print; track status of licensing agreements and rights issues related to work in the collection and exhibitions; monitor changing status of works on ARS/VAGA lists
• Train and monitor collections care volunteers.
• Conduct monthly inspections of the outdoor collection; Assist in the cleaning of the collection
• Manage annual inventory of the collection and provide summary report.
• Schedule and supervise activities of interns, volunteers, and contract workers.
• Interact with staff, visitors, artists, and exhibition partners in a positive manner.
• Serve as an ambassador for Grounds For Sculpture to help foster a culture of inclusion for all members, donors, volunteers, and guests.

Requirements

Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in fine arts, art history, museum studies or other similar fields preferred
• 3 or more years working as a Registrar in an art museum or gallery setting
• Demonstrate respect and inclusiveness to all employees, embracing differences
• Requires a high degree of multi-tasking; able to plan and organize to maximize efficient workflow.
• Demonstrated understanding of museum registration best practices.
• Fundamental understanding of art collection databases; Mimsy experience a plus.
• Adept at navigating contemporary copyright issues.
• Experience working with a contemporary art collection and knowledge of proper art handling techniques, particularly 3-D work.
• Experience negotiating and contracting regional and cross-country shippers; knowledge of shipping regulations. International shipping experience a plus.
• Capable of exercising discretion and diplomacy when working closely with artists, donors, and lenders.

Compensation & Benefits:
Salary: $54,000
Full Time (Exempt)
