Overview of Responsibilities: The Director of Development is charged with raising all contributed income for Symphony in C. The Director of Development is responsible for directing and implementing an annual comprehensive plan to meet all fund-raising goals of the Symphony from individuals, corporations, foundations and government agencies, and to communicate both the plan and the progress in achieving the goals established to the board of directors on a regular basis.

Duties and Responsibilities

Specific Duties and Responsibilities: Develop, implement and coordinate all aspects of the annual fund campaign, and work to develop appropriate short- and long-term fund-raising goals and objectives. Participate in direct solicitations of prospects for annual fund campaign. In addition to the annual fund, Symphony in C in the beginning stages of a campaign (Crescendo Campaign), to raise funds to be invested in perpetuity to support the Symphony in the future. The Director of Development will work with the Crescendo Campaign Committee and the Board of Directors to identify and cultivate campaign donors.

Coordinate and secure corporate sponsorships for all classical, educational, and special events and any other concerts and educational activities performed throughout the season. Identify potential grant opportunities, and research and write grant proposals to government, corporation, and foundation sources for educational outreach activities, concerts, special projects, and general operating support. Work closely with the President and Board of Directors to accurately determine the financial goals of special events. Attend all cultivation events. Identify and develop Board and volunteer leadership through, among others, participation in Board committee meetings and ongoing donor cultivation efforts. Perform other duties as assigned by President.

Requirements

Requirements: The successful candidate will have a minimum of two years’ experience in a management role in the development office of a not-for-profit arts or cultural organization. You will have a consistent track record of success in achieving contributed income goals and in generating at least $1 million in gift income annually from individuals, foundations, and corporations. You will have successful experience in the design and implementation of annual and major gift campaigns, endowment campaigns, planned giving programs, corporate sponsorship development, and special project fundraising. The successful candidate will have a knowledge of and strong interest in classical music. You will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and will be able to work effectively with the Board, staff, musicians, community leaders and volunteers.

The successful candidate will have excellent organizational abilities to ensure attention to detail, timely and thorough follow-up, and accurate record-keeping. You will be able to balance multiple priorities and demands. You will have excellent computer skills and will be comfortable utilizing the research and analysis tools. The successful candidate will have an excellent working knowledge of southern New Jersey and their philanthropic community, as well as the regional and national philanthropic communities. You will be able to accept a work schedule that includes nights and weekend activities and occasional travel.

Job Reporting: The Director of Development is a hybrid position, with some days in the office and some remote work.
